Expect The Unexpected DVD Review

JOHNNIE TO

1) What concept do you want to deliver through the movie "Expect The Unexpected", especially the ending?

Actually the theme of this movie is about unexpected fate. There are so many unpredictable things in our lives. Even if it is foreseeable, the result may not be what you expect.
Just like the opening of the movie, which shows a mother and her daughter at home.
To stay at home should be the safest you can be. It was unexpected that a robber broke into their home and that the mother and her daughter were raped.
They were still undiscovered after a week. This happens in our daily lives, which I came upon in Taiwan.
I feel that in our anticipation, in our tranquil life, there are always unexpected happenings, especially in relation to love. For example - you are in love with somebody, but they don't how you feel.
On the other hand, someone feels affection for you but you have never asked how they feel. Or it may be your illusion that somebody admires you, when actually they don't.
You would think that people would realise, but in fact it's not the case.
Most people think that they are clearly expressing their feelings, but actually they are not.

The ending is the conclusion of everything.
Why do all of them die? Of course, we all die eventually, but we often put off today what we can do tomorrow. But what would happen if you pass away tomorrow?
Actually, in the movie, all of them have not accomplished what they should.
The subject matter of the film is - we have to treasure every single minute, or even every single second, of our lives, because nobody can tell what is going to happen tomorrow or just a moment after.

2) What response do you anticipate from the audiences about this negative ending?

When I started to produce this movie, all I wanted to do is to keep close to the subject - life is important.
I am not going to entertain audiences, but I don't want to hurt their feelings either.
However, I need to produce this movie - with an ending most people will consider "negative".
I believe this ending is the best way to express the importance of life - every single moment is important.
This death ending is used to give everybody some 'introspection'.
If I do not end the movie in his way, nobody will pay attention - An appeased ending, or a happy ending, is unable to touch the right chord. You probably do not know what will happen tomorrow, or you may not know what is going to happen just a moment after.
I insist on this ending, although I have anticipated that it will be unacceptable to some audiences. But I stand firm on my principle. The reason is that, to film this movie, the theme must be clear - life is important.

3) Every movie carries its social responsibility. Have you considered that "Expect the Unexpected" may have negative social effect?

I am a movie director. I absolutely admit that I have to be responsible to society. I have to face audiences and also the whole society. "Expect the Unexpected", definitely does not have any ideology to drive people to commit crime. It is not a movie which glamorises violence.
All I wanted to express is the importance of life. Therefore, I don't know.
For example, somebody, after watching the movie, may feel that this is a movie with a negative attitude, no matter the ending or even the whole movie. I do not have this feeling.
Even if I do have such a feeling, it may probably be due to the direction of thinking. My direction of thinking may be questionable, but my motivation is definitely not.
The motive for making this movie is to bring an introspection to audiences.
We have to face all the things that encompass us, including our job, family and friends.
You have to look at, and scrutinise, yourself.
Therefore, "Expect the Unexpected" is certainly not a movie with negative a disposition.

4) From "Lifeline", "The Longest Nite" to "Expect the Unexpected", Lau Ching Wan keeps on changing in both his image and acting role. Do you plan for it deliberately?

Actually, it is deliberate.
We want to challenge each other - both myself and Ching-Wan.
Ching-Wan is willing to do so. He doesn't have to act as the good guy. He acts pretty well as a villain or a cripple, etc. He is ready to try different characters. We both agree that there should be differences for each movie.
I have my own production practice. He has is own acting know-how. These jobs are what we wanted to do - or you could say that it was planned!
Actually, every artiste, not only Lau Ching-Wan, (if we can work with some more actors), all hope to play a role different to their past performances.

YO YO MONG

1) "Expect the Unexpected" is your first movie, what is your feeling on this? What is the different with advertisement shooting?

The major difference between a movie and an advertisement is that a movie is a 2-hour production while advertisements, I think the maximum is one minute.
Besides, advertisements are used to sell the product of the advertiser, and I think a movie is used to sell myself.
You need to package yourself nicely in order attract audiences.

2) Was there any difficulty in studying and imitating the role you played?

Difficulty? There's great difficulty.
At first, I didn't know how to pave the way for the gradual character change of the role that I played in the movie. But I started with the simplest method - I asked the director about the main individuality of the role.
In "Expect the Unexpected", my character has a very determined personality.
However, strong-willed doesn't equal bright. But she will try her best to finish her task. Even if it can't be accomplished, she will try to hard as she can. I kept this mentality in mind during the production. "No Good"? - Never mind. Try again; let's do the best we can.

3) Which part of the movie do you have the deepest feeling? Do you like the ending of the story?

The deepest feeling?
My deepest feeling came from the scene where I ask Ching Wan to return my keys.
Actually, I was not impressed by what the scene wanted to deliver, but what I learnt from that scene I performed pretty well at that time - I had to express agitated and irritated feelings.
No matter how many times I tried, the director kept on saying "No Good."
At first, I thought my expression was not good enough, then Ching-Wan taught me that "Facial expression alone is not enough, body language is also very important". Then, he showed me how to rush out into the road without looking, showing the feeling of speed and hurriedness.
You should give the audiences a kind of pressure. I acted accordingly and I did it. Hence, my deepest feeling is that: "Acting depends not only on facial expression and dialogue - body language is just as crucial".

Actually, I don't like the ending because it's too depressing.
I, of course, want an ending where nobody dies - especially Ching-Wan - who is my boyfriend in the movie.
I think there are too many unhappy things in our daily lives. You want to relax whilst watching a movie. Now, you watch a movie with a bleak ending...everyone's dead, it's not only one or two

RUBY WONG

1) Which part of the movie do you have the deepest feeling?

The scene about Raymond.
His role was a cop. I loved him but he didn't know. In that scene, he was shot when he was on duty. I saw what happened and I rushed to him, to stop him from bleeding.
It was because the blood was gushing from the wound. Why was I deeply touched at that time? Maybe because none of my friends have been hurt like that. Suddenly my friend whom I admired secretly was seriously injured. I was really hurt in that scene.

2) Do you like the ending of the movie?

It's so real. Police are also ordinary people. They are not unbeatable supermen. No shelter, no bullet-proof jacket. You have to die if it's your turn.

3) Do you like this movie?

Of course I like it. It's because of the story - especially the ending. It is because it's really out of the expectation of many people.
Usually, police stories focus on the belief that "a hero never dies". How could anyone have imagined that all of them would die? It's so unexpected. It corresponds to the movie title.

4) What ending do you want for this movie?

Personally, I wanted a happy ending. I don't want to see all of them die. "To separate from life and death" is not what I want to see.

RAYMOND WONG

1) What role did you play in "Expect the Unexpected"?

In "Expect the Unexpected" my role that of a playboy who has a lot of girlfriends.
I remember there was a scene in the movie showing that I was hurt by a gunshot to my neck.
A lot of girls were waiting for my news outside the hospital - they wanted to know about my condition.
Actually this is quite a difficult role to play. In reality, I'm quite a loyal person.

2) How did you feel when you started the production of your second movie?

In fact, I think the most important was my involvement.
In my first movie, I didn't know what I was doing. But in the second movie, I had a sense of involvement to imitate the role.
Besides, I tried different methods to do the best.
For example, once I received the script, I rehearsed with my partner and I exchanged ideas on how to play the role.
There was a scene, which was really simple, asking Ruby to feed me with grapes. Indeed is not easy to speak when you're eating grapes. Finally we needed more than twenty takes to finish that scene!

3) What is your opinion about the ending of the movie?

Many people think that the ending is too negative. But, personally, I like this ending.
I garnered some positive concepts; i.e. there's no absolute in our lives. The world is ever changing and there's always a glimmer of hope.
